NASCAR Richard Petty 1968 Roadrunner from MIC
The 1968 NASCAR season was one of frustration for some drivers, including Richard Petty. In late '67 Petty had forseen problems with the 1968 Plymouth Roadrunner - a car not known for its aerodynamics. Petty put in a request to NASCAR for a change to the 1968 Dodge Charger, not realizing that despite the slick looks of the Charger, its handling characteristics were lacking as well! The front grille acted as a huge air brake and the rear window created a vacuum that caused lift on the rear wheels and a loose car around turns. So, the Roadrunner it was! Crew chief Maurice Petty did what he could to make the Roadrunner competitive with the Ford models, eventually making it faster than many teams including the Charger.
